OSRS GEAR PROGRESSION GUIDE

Choose an OSRS gear upgrade by impact, budget and requirement

OSRS gear progression is rarely a straight line from cheapest to most expensive. The right upgrade depends on combat style, the activity you plan to do, the equipment already owned and the amount of GP that should remain for supplies. LootPath presents a curated Melee, Ranged and Magic upgrade path and marks which steps fit the selected budget.

The current gear builder focuses on progression logic rather than a complete damage simulation. It helps answer the first question—what meaningful upgrade can I afford next—before a detailed boss setup accounts for defence, attack speed, ammunition, prayers, potions and special attacks.

Visual summary of this decision page. Use the interactive result together with the evidence and limitations below.
01

Upgrade impact

The useful combat improvement an item provides for the activities the player intends to run.

02

Gear requirement

A skill level, quest or minigame reward needed before the item can be equipped or obtained.

03

Opportunity cost

Other upgrades, supplies or training that become unavailable after spending the selected GP.

04

Complete setup

The weapon, armour, jewellery, ammunition and consumables working together for one activity.

LANDING PAGE SCOPE

One primary search intent, with a boundary players can verify

A useful upgrade solves a real activity and leaves enough bank for ammunition, charges, supplies and deaths.

Primary search intent: OSRS gear progression

This section targets OSRS gear progression, Melee upgrades, Ranged upgrades, Magic gear and budget loadout questions.

The hub owns the broad cluster question; detail pages own a named item, skill, quest, boss, method or account mode. That separation prevents two URLs from competing for the same query.

Next verification: Reserve supply cost, confirm requirements and compare the old and new setup against the monster you plan to fight.

Player context

Item price and total stats are starting points; attack speed, accuracy and target defence determine practical value.

The page keeps official game terminology and explains how the decision changes with budget, account access, execution and evidence type. Useful context matters more than repeating the exact phrase.

What this page does not promise

Curated gear prices are not live DPS proof and do not account for every target or operating cost.

A visible boundary protects the player and defines the topic. When a question needs another formula, entity or evidence source, an internal link leads to the correct landing page instead of stretching this page artificially.

Next verification: Reserve supply cost, confirm requirements and compare the old and new setup against the monster you plan to fight.

This page uses “OSRS gear progression” as its central question and assigns narrower variants to related URLs, keeping content, canonical signals, hreflang and internal links consistent.

HOW TO USE THIS TOOL

Three steps from search to decision

1

Select a combat style

Choose Melee, Ranged or Magic so the route compares upgrades serving the same purpose.

2

Set a realistic budget

Keep enough GP outside the budget for food, potions, ammunition, runes and deaths.

3

Check the next requirement

An earned quest or minigame item can outperform a more expensive Grand Exchange purchase.

PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to avoid expensive but low-impact OSRS gear upgrades

Price alone does not measure usefulness. A small Strength bonus can matter when it creates a new maximum hit, while an expensive defensive upgrade may barely change kill speed. Weapons often have a larger effect than armour, but accuracy, attack style and the target’s defence can reverse that rule.

Build around the content you play most. A Toxic blowpipe, Rune crossbow and Bow of faerdhinen solve different problems even though all are Ranged weapons. Magic damage, prayer bonus and defensive utility also change the value of robes and accessories from one encounter to another.

The listed prices are currently curated prototype values rather than live Grand Exchange quotes. Before buying a recommended item, check the market page and confirm that the prerequisite, charges and ongoing supply cost fit your account.

DECISION QUALITY CHECK

Spend GP on the bottleneck that limits the intended activity

Compare complete setups rather than isolated item prices, and preserve enough operating cash to use the equipment repeatedly after the purchase. The selected budget should cover a usable loadout, not only one attractive slot. Recheck the target after every major upgrade.

Confirm before acting

01
Choose a target first

A weapon can be excellent against one defence profile and inefficient against another. Name the boss, Slayer task or training method before comparing upgrades.

02
Test the max-hit breakpoint

A small offensive bonus matters most when it changes a maximum hit, accuracy threshold or attack-speed interaction in the full setup.

03
Include ongoing charges

Ammunition, runes, scales, crystal charges, potions and death costs can outweigh the difference between two purchase prices.

Common planning mistakes

01
Buying the most expensive armour first

Weapons and earned offensive upgrades often create more useful damage than a premium defensive slot.

02
Ignoring untradeable progression

Quest and minigame rewards can provide strong value without consuming the same portion of the bank.

03
Spending the supply bank

An upgrade that leaves no cash for food, ammunition or reclaim fees cannot support a repeatable PvM session.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What players usually want to know

Clear limitations are part of a useful tool. These answers separate live data, exact calculations and planning estimates.

01What should I upgrade first in OSRS?+

Prioritize the item that improves the activity you play most. Weapons, earned untradeables and upgrades that create a max hit often deserve attention before small defensive gains.

02Are the gear prices live Grand Exchange prices?+

Not yet. The gear page currently uses curated prices. The separate market page provides live signals for its tracked items, and database integration is planned.

03Does the gear builder calculate DPS?+

The gear builder itself compares progression, requirements and budget. Use LootPath's separate OSRS DPS Calculator to enter player stats, bonuses, Prayer, stance, attack speed and target defence for a standard two-loadout comparison.

04Does the OSRS gear progression include untradeable items?+

Yes, the curated routes can include earned upgrades such as Fighter torso or Ava’s accumulator, because account progression is not limited to Grand Exchange purchases.
